Capri has been a place of art for more than a century, and today the contemporary is seen outside museums: galleries in the historic centre, installations in public spaces and rooms holding works permanently, visible without a ticket.
The galleries of the centre
Within a few hundred metres of the Piazzetta there are exhibition spaces working with international artists, with shows rotating through the season. Entry is free and evening openings are the summer norm.
Art outside the galleries
Sculptures and installations appear in squares, gardens and viewpoints: a very Capri way of treating art as part of the landscape rather than an interlude. It changes year by year, so it is worth asking locally what is on view.
An art bar in Piazzetta Cerio
Spirito di Capri was conceived as an art bar: its walls show contemporary works in collaboration with Franco Senesi and Liquid Art System, and the room reads as an exhibition space with a marble social table at its centre. The project is told on the Art & Capri page.
