Morning: the Piazzetta and the alleys
The first ferry leaves Marina Grande half empty: take the funicular up to Piazza Umberto I, the Piazzetta, while the tables are still perfectly set. From here the alleys open towards Via Camerelle and Via Tragara. Just above the Piazzetta lies Piazzetta Cerio, the small sheltered square beside the church of Santo Stefano: the point where the island lowers its voice.
Midday: Gardens of Augustus and Via Krupp
The Gardens of Augustus look onto Marina Piccola and the Faraglioni at the same time, with Via Krupp descending in hairpins carved into the rock. It is the island's most recognisable picture, ten minutes on foot from the Certosa di San Giacomo.
Afternoon: Belvedere di Tragara and the sea
Via Tragara leads to the belvedere facing the Faraglioni: the best light arrives after four in the afternoon. With time to spare, walk down to Marina Piccola for a quick swim; otherwise continue high up towards the Natural Arch and the Matermania Grotto.
Evening: back in the centre
