At 589 metres, Monte Solaro is the island's highest point: twelve minutes by chairlift from Piazza Vittoria in Anacapri, or an hour on foot. From the summit you see the Faraglioni, the Sorrento Peninsula and, on clear days, Vesuvius.
Chairlift or footpath
The single-seat chairlift rises over vegetable plots, dry-stone walls and broom in unexpected silence. Walkers take the Passetiello path or the climb from Via Caposcuro: a demanding ascent, proper shoes, water in the bag.
What you see from the top
The summit terrace turns through the whole horizon: the Faraglioni to the south-east, Punta Carena to the west, the Bay of Naples to the north. It is where the island's geography finally makes sense, better than from any boat.
Fitting it into the day
Mornings are better, when the air is clear and the light does not flatten distance. The bus back to Capri town takes about twenty minutes: in Piazzetta Cerio, Spirito di Capri stays open from 11am to 2am for a late lunch or an aperitivo.
